Obituary

Oliver went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma at the age of 94.

Oliver William Youngstrom was born on August 31, 1927, in New York City, New York to Olaf and Lina (Emig) Youngstrom.  He grew up in New Rochelle, New York.  He went to Albert Leonard High School and graduated with the class of 1945.  He joined the Marines on August 29, 1945, serving faithfully for four years and was honorably discharged on August 28, 1949. He then went on to college at Roberts Wesleyan College as a vocational school in Rochester, New Yor for two years.  He found the Lord Jesus Christ at Roberts Wesleyan in 1949 at a Sunday night service beginning the semester.  Oliver then went on to Columbia University to the school of general studies in New York City graduating in June of 1953 a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biology.

Oliver married Jessie Lee Johnson on June 12, 1953.  They had their first son, John Oliver Youngstrom on January 15, 1957, their second son, David Phillip born on September 28, 1958, their third child and first daughter Rebecca Sussana born January 9, 1960, and finally their last child, Joy Louise was born March 9, 1961. 

Oliver then studied at University of Cincinnati graduating with a master’s degree in Secondary Education in 1962. He taught school in Cincinnati from 1958-1962.  He then went on teaching at Akron Public School from 1962-1964.  Teaching at Jamestown Community College moving there from 1964-1968.  He then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to teach at Oral Roberts University, teaching audio tutorial biology.  Teaching for Tulsa Public Schools as a substitute between 1968-1970.  Moving to Wharton Texas to teach at Wharton Junior College, teaching audio tutorial biology, general biology, and biology for disadvantaged students.  He then lived in Sydney, Texas and taught at Zephyr Public School teaching biology, chemistry, physics, and general math.  Teaching at Pottsville, Texas needed a chemistry, biology, and physics teacher.  Moving to Muskogee in 1979, and then to Sapulpa, teaching High School at Kellyville for one year.  He began working at the Creek County Health Department in 1980 as a Sanitarian or a Health Inspector and retiring from there in March of 1999. 

Oliver cared for his wife faithfully as she went into a nursing home from December 2004 until July 1, 2009.  They were married for fifty-six years until she passed.

Living children John Powers, David and Debbie Youngstrom, Rebecca and Mark Hyatt, Joy and Jon Blandin.  Oliver has six grandchildren, Priscilla Joy Schowengerdt, William Seth Shingleton, Richard Lee Shingleton, Nicole Marie Blandin, Timothy Watson Blandin, Elizabeth Blandin and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Ann Shingleton, Erica Joy Schowengerdt, Alexander Lee Shingleton. 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 9, 2022, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Smith Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Oliver Youngstrom will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, 2:00 PM at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Daniel Goff officiating.  Burial will follow at South Heights Cemetery, Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
