Once upon a time, not too many days past, there was a surprise. A surprise that was tiny, and pink, and a bundle of love wrapped up like a package and placed in the care of a young family. The only instructions found with the bundle were to love the dickens out of the little one. Also, one day, sometime in the future, the young family loved the bundle with everything in them and more, the One who loaned the little one to them would return and take him home with Him. And so, the young family loved the little boy and then loved him some more. And the youngster grew and thrived under the care of the young family (and grandma, too). His days were filled with laughter, spaghetti with meatballs and red sauce, nights with dreaming of puppies and kittens, Minecraft, tractors, fire trucks, Legos and inventions to make the world he loved a better place. And he was happy. And the young family (and grandma, too) were happy.
One fall evening, the One came calling. “You have done well, my trusted friends. The child is joyous and well-loved and grown in kindness and understanding under your careful watch. Well done indeed! Although it will grieve your hearts to the point of breaking, I have come to collect my precious one, but do not lose hope. Do not let the love you’ve poured into this child of mine grow cold. Hold and protect it and eventually it will help ease your sorrow, my dear ones.” And so it was, after the sorrow seemed like it would drown them forever, the love they held on to seasoned, the memories of their time together until the sunsets brought contentment and the dawn carried hope.
