Joan J. James, 80 of Sapulpa, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012 with her three children at her side. She was born on June 17, 1932 in Kellyville, Oklahoma to Van and Josephine Barrett. She was co-owner of the former James & Son Construction, Sapulpa. She devoted much time and hard work to the business alongside her husband, Ken James, until his death in 1999. Joan always worked throughout her lifetime. In earlier years Joan worked as a waitress at the Hamburger King, Bristow and the Howard Johnson's Cafe in Stroud located at the half-way point on the Turner Turnpike. She worked as a nurse and surgery assistant at the hospital in Stroud. Joan also worked for the Creek County Treasurer's Office and the Creek County Assessor's Office at the Courthouse in Sapulpa. Joan was the manager of the first Braum's Ice cream Store in Sapulpa. Joan not only worked outside the home, but was also devoted to her family. She was a loving mother always doing things for her family, never taking time for herself. Joan graduated from Bristow High School. She was a Baptist, attending the First Baptist Church in Bristow and Sapulpa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Jamesand parents, Van and Josephine Barrett. She is survived by her children, Kenneth James, Jr., Jo Carol James and Michael James; grandchildren, Heather James Cupp, Jacob James and Kimberly James; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle McVey, Mercedes McVey, Corey McVey, Keighlee James and Jessika James; brothers, Kenneth Barrett, Ronnie Barrett and sister, Delores Lippert. Private family graveside services will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Magnolia Gardens Cemetery, Bristow, Oklahoma. Officiating will be the Reverend Doyle Pryor. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
